Why I Support Zohran Mamdani to Be the Next Mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, Will Run Against Mayor Adams - The New York Times

By Imam Shamsi Ali

There is no doubt that New York City, with all its current issues, is still one of the greatest and most desirable cities to visit or live in. It is arguably the most vibrant city in the world, incredibly diverse in its population, cultures, traditions, religions, and even in the way its inhabitants express themselves.

New York City is home to Wall Street, the center of the global economy. It is also home to the United Nations, the global organization representing all nations. In addition, with its Times Square, New York City is known as the city that never sleeps. The city gained even more popularity after the tragic 9/11 terror attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center, a symbol of global capitalism.

I am fortunate to be one of its inhabitants, known as New Yorkers. My lifestyle is deeply attached to this city, to the point where anytime I leave for another destination, even within the US, I feel lonely. I miss the bustling traffic, the sound of ambulances, and the view of towering skyscrapers. I also miss my community, the Muslim community, which has been growing and continues to thrive in this world capital.

City of Immigrants

The US is known as a nation of immigrants. Except for Native Americans, everyone in America—whether from Asia, Latin and South America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern or Western Europe—are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. And no one, including the president, should feel more American than others. We are all equal. This is the principle upon which the Constitution of the US begins: We the people.

New York City is particularly known as a city of immigrants. It is here where immigrants, especially from Europe, first entered America. Today, an island is preserved to commemorate this historical fact. This island, located next to the Statue of Liberty, has become a tourist destination. Every year, 100 immigrants or descendants of immigrants are chosen to receive the prestigious non-military Ellis Island Honor Award. I am honored and blessed to be one of the recipients.

With this in mind, I am confident that New York City will continue to embrace all its residents to achieve their dreams. Over time, the city has become more open and inclusive to all. Anyone in New York can become anyone they aspire to be, including immigrants and Muslims who dream of becoming the mayor of this city. This is guaranteed by the Constitution and the core values upheld by both the city and the country.

Zohran Mamdani: The Next NYC Mayor

I first met Zohran Mamdani when he joined our Eid prayers a few years ago. At the time, he came as a member of the New York State Assembly to address New Yorkers—a political tradition where politicians engage with their constituents.

Zohran Mamdani is different. He came and joined our prayers not only as a politician but as a member of our community. I mean this in the truest sense of the word. He is faithful to his religion, fully committed to its teachings, and never shy to openly say that he is a Muslim. He is proud to be known as a Muslim, even during times when Islam is portrayed negatively in the media.

What is even more unique and inspiring about Zohran Mamdani is his commitment to the cause of the marginalized and oppressed, both locally and globally. He defended the rights of taxi drivers several years ago and succeeded. This led to his election to the New York State Assembly, representing Astoria, Queens.

Moreover, at a time when very few politicians were willing to stand for what is right—not to favor Palestinians, but simply to call for a ceasefire in Palestine to stop further massacres in Gaza—Zohran Mamdani was among the very few who stood tall to advocate for peace and call for a ceasefire.

In doing so, he remained consistent in his stance, regardless of whether he was speaking to Muslims, Arabs, or even non-Muslims and Zionists.

For me, this is a clear sign that Zohran Mamdani is a different kind of politician. I would call him a non-conventional politician, just as I have been called a non-conventional Imam in New York City. He is brave enough to do what his heart and mind dictate, which is unique, as many politicians tend to deny their own hearts and minds.

Conclusion

In conclusion, New York City, the US, and the world need such non-conventional politicians—those who follow their hearts and minds, not narrow interests by serving the capitalists. And New York City needs that more than ever!

With this in mind, I hereby declare my support and will do everything possible to bring him to the City Hall of the Great New York City… InshaAllah!
